Assam Flood Crisis: Priyanka Gandhi Appeals for Swift Rescue Operations and Aid for Victims' Families
New Delhi, 21-06-2024 : On Friday, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called on the Assam government to accelerate relief and rescue efforts for those affected by the ongoing floods in the state. She also emphasized the need for compensation for the families who have lost loved ones in the disaster.
The flood situation in Assam remained dire, with over four lakh people affected across multiple districts. Officials reported that several major rivers, including the Kopili, Barak, and Kushiyara, were flowing above the danger level as of Thursday evening.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) written in Hindi, Priyanka Gandhi expressed her concern over the devastating impact of the floods. “The news of 36 people dying in this disaster so far is saddening. Several lakh people in 19 districts of the state are affected by the floods. It is an appeal to the state government to speed up relief and rescue operations for the flood-affected people and also provide compensation to the families of the deceased,” she stated.
She also called upon Congress workers and leaders to assist the affected individuals in any way possible.
The affected districts include Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Darrang, Goalpara, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Karimganj, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, South Salmara, Tamulpur, and Udalguri. These areas continue to suffer from the effects of incessant rainfall that has led to severe flooding.
Officials have reported that the death toll from this year’s floods, landslides, and storms has reached 36. The continuous heavy rains have exacerbated the situation, making swift and effective response measures more critical than ever.
