Congress Moves EC Against Suren Daimari Over Election Withdrawal Controversy
APCC alleges defamation and misuse of campaign funds following candidate’s sudden withdrawal
Guwahati, April 10: The Indian National Congress has lodged a police complaint against its former candidate Suren Daimari after he withdrew from the upcoming Assembly elections and severed ties with the party.
The complaint was filed at Bhangagarh Police Station by Ramanna Baruah, general secretary (organisation) of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). He alleged that Daimari’s actions have caused reputational harm and raised concerns over the use of party funds.
According to the complaint, Daimari had sought and received the party ticket to contest from the Udalguri Legislative Assembly Constituency. His nomination was duly accepted by the Election Commission, following which the party transferred ₹30 lakh to support his campaign.
Baruah stated that Daimari later resigned from the party on April 8 and publicly announced his withdrawal from the 2026 Assembly polls. During media interactions, he reportedly used derogatory terms against the Congress, triggering the party’s legal response.
The APCC has urged authorities to investigate the matter and register a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, citing alleged defamation and possible financial irregularities. Further action is expected based on the findings of the police inquiry.
