Congress MPs Protest in Parliament Over Alleged Police Action on Student Demonstrators

New Delhi, July 27: The Congress intensified its attack on the Centre on Monday as party MPs, led by general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staged a protest inside the Parliament House complex over the alleged use of excessive police force against students demonstrating over the NEET paper leak controversy. The party demanded an apology from Union Home Minister Amit Shah and called for action against those responsible for the alleged crackdown.

Gathering near the Makar Dwar of Parliament, Congress lawmakers carried banners and placards highlighting their concerns over the treatment of student protesters. They raised slogans accusing the government of suppressing democratic voices and urged the Centre to explain the police action taken during the demonstrations.

The protest marked another attempt by the Congress led Opposition to keep the issue alive during the ongoing Parliament session. Party leaders said the alleged use of force against students was unacceptable and insisted that those involved in ordering or carrying out the action should be held accountable.

Rahul Gandhi Seeks Accountability

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has also stepped up pressure on the government by writing to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In his letter, Gandhi sought clarification on the police response to the student demonstrations and questioned whether the use of force, including reported deployment of pellet guns, had received official approval.

The Congress leader described the incident as a serious violation of democratic principles and argued that peaceful protest is a constitutional right. He maintained that governments are expected to engage with agitating citizens through dialogue rather than force.

According to Gandhi, the alleged action against students has sparked widespread concern across the country and raised important questions about the government’s commitment to protecting democratic freedoms.

Opposition Targets Centre

Congress leaders alleged that students demanding transparency and accountability in examination-related matters were met with unnecessary force instead of constructive engagement. They said the issue extends beyond the NEET controversy and reflects broader concerns about the treatment of young people raising legitimate grievances.

The party reiterated its demand for an apology from both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, arguing that the government must accept responsibility for the alleged police excesses and ensure justice for the affected students.

The student protest issue is expected to remain a major flashpoint during the Parliament session, with Opposition parties indicating that they will continue to raise the matter inside and outside both Houses.

The Congress has vowed to pursue the issue until accountability is fixed and measures are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
