Congress Prepares for High-Stakes Winter Session, Puts Spotlight on Electoral Integrity & Security

Party to push hard on electoral integrity, national security, and accountability in Parliament

New Delhi, Nov 28 : The Congress Parliamentary Strategy Group (PSG) will hold a crucial meeting on Sunday at 5 pm at 10 Janpath, the residence of Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, to finalise the party’s approach for the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament.

The meeting comes on the same day as an all party meeting called by the government, signalling the likelihood of a sharp, confrontational session ahead.

Congress leaders are expected to adopt a united and assertive stand on major national concerns, with electoral integrity emerging as the party’s key priority. The leadership plans to flag alleged irregularities in recent state elections, including Bihar, and raise objections to the Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls (SIR). Jairam Ramesh has accused the Election Commission and ruling allies of enabling “silent invisible rigging,” while the Commission insists the SIR is transparent and vital for fair polls.

National security issues will also dominate Congress’ agenda. The party is likely to seek clarity on the Red Fort terror blast and question whether the “new normal doctrine” treating terror attacks as acts of war, invoked after the Pahalgam attack\ will apply to the November 10 incident as well.

Alongside these, Congress is expected to demand debates on unemployment, widening income inequality, foreign policy challenges, and border security.

The party is also set to reiterate its demand for the Prime Minister to respond to US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of brokering an India-Pakistan ceasefire, a statement that has stirred diplomatic and political discussion.

Concerns over alleged government interference in key institutions, including the Election Commission and judiciary, will be raised, with the party calling for safeguarding constitutional autonomy. Social issues—such as rising crimes against women and Scheduled Castes—and the demand for full statehood for Jammu and Kashmir will further widen the scope of Congress’ interventions.

The PSG’s primary objective is to build consensus among Congress MPs and coordinate with INDIA bloc allies. Decisions taken in today’s meeting will shape the Opposition’s strategy and set the tone for the entire Winter Session.
