Congress Slams Modi for Showing ‘Moral Cowardice’ Amid Global Criticism of Netanyahu
Congress criticizes PM Modi for supporting Netanyahu amid Gaza crisis, calls it “moral cowardice”
New Delhi, Feb 25: The Congress on Wednesday criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his visit to Israel, alleging that he is displaying “moral cowardice” by openly supporting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while the world condemns Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Congress general secretary for communications, Jairam Ramesh, said Modi is “brazenly embracing” Netanyahu, who has reduced Gaza to rubble and continues expanding settlements in the occupied West Bank. Ramesh contrasted the current stance with India’s historical support for Palestine, citing Jawaharlal Nehru’s 1960 visit to Gaza, India’s issuance of a commemorative Palestine stamp in 1981, and formal recognition of Palestine in 1988.
“When the entire world is critical of his ‘dear friend’ Netanyahu, Modi will be displaying moral cowardice,” Ramesh said in a post on X.
Earlier, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra urged Modi to raise the issue of the Gaza genocide during his address to the Israeli Parliament, the Knesset, and demand justice for the victims. “India has always stood for what is right and must continue to demonstrate truth, peace, and justice to the world,” she said.
Modi’s visit, beginning Wednesday, aims to strengthen defence and trade cooperation and marks his second trip to Israel in nine years. The India-Israel relationship was elevated to a strategic partnership during Modi’s first visit in 2017.
The Congress has also accused the government of abandoning Palestinians, highlighting ongoing civilian casualties in Gaza despite Modi’s visit.
