Crime Unveiled: Woman Fraudulently Posing as Police Insider Arrested for Extortion in Posing as Police Insider Arrested
19-09-2023 : In a recent development in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, the police have apprehended an individual who was allegedly engaged in extortion activities, deceitfully posing as a close associate of the local law enforcement authorities.
According to an official statement released by the police, the arrest was made following a well-coordinated and efficient operation by the Shopian Police. The suspect has been identified as Mehbooba Akhtar, the wife of Shafkat Mohi-ud-din Kuchay and a resident of Kardar, Kulgam. She had been operating as a tout, exploiting her purported connections with the police in Shopian to extort money from unsuspecting locals. Her modus operandi involved promising to secure the release of individuals detained by the police under preventive detention in exchange for a substantial sum of money.
This criminal activity did not occur in isolation, as the police investigation revealed that she had an accomplice, identified as Ghulam Hassain Shah, son of Mohd Shaban Shah from Behibagh, Kulgam. Both individuals were implicated in this fraudulent scheme. Consequently, a case bearing FIR No- 158/2023 under the relevant sections of the law has been registered at the Shopian Police Station, and a comprehensive investigation into the matter has been initiated.
Upon being summoned to the Police Station for questioning, the accused provided detailed insights into their elaborate extortion network and tactics employed to extort money from unsuspecting victims. It was disclosed that Mehbooba Akhtar had managed to extract a staggering sum of 8.4 lakh rupees from several families over a period of time. During her arrest, the police successfully recovered 2.5 lakh rupees from her possession, with the expectation of further recovery in the ongoing investigation.
Commenting on the incident, SSP Shopian, Tanushree, emphasized that extortion is a form of blackmail and urged the public to remain vigilant and not succumb to the tactics of such unscrupulous individuals. The arrest of these extortionists serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining awareness and vigilance in the face of criminal activities that seek to exploit and victimize the unsuspecting populace.
