Criminologists Society Urges Central and J&K Governments to Address Escalating Crime Trends in the Region, Rising Concerns

Jammu, 24-12-2023: The Criminologists Society has issued a compelling appeal to both the Central Government and the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, urging a reassessment of the perceived return to normalcy in the region. Contrary to the assumption based on increased tourist inflow, members of the society convened in a meeting to deliberate on future programs and the prevailing crime situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

During the discussions, a unanimous consensus emerged among the members, highlighting the alarming surge in Cyber Crimes, Drug-related offenses, Motor vehicle-related crimes, including a rise in road accidents attributed to the criminal negligence of drivers, and the persistent threat of Terrorism. Despite the commendable efforts of the police and security agencies, there is an evident lack of control over these escalating issues. The society attributed this to the current approach of responding after incidents occur and emphasized the necessity of understanding the root causes of such incidents.

Mr. Rameshwar Singh Jamwal, Advocate and President of the Criminologists Society, emphasized the need for the government to meticulously study the comprehensive suggestions and remedial measures proposed by experts in various conferences and seminars organized by the society over the past two decades. He pointed out that timely implementation of these measures could have altered the security landscape in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Chief Advisor of the society, Mr. B.S. Manhas, Advocate, highlighted the gravity of the Drug problem, deeming it a significant threat to the country, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and civil society at large. He advocated for a reevaluation of the current approach to tackling this issue, emphasizing the need for a different strategy.

Several key figures spoke during the meeting, including General Secretaries Mr. Ranjeet Singh and Mr. Rakesh Durswal, along with Mr. Ajay Gandotra, Mr. Pawan Dev Singh, Mr. Sandeep Singh, Mr. Amarveer Manhas, Mr. Ajatshatru Kohli, Mrs. Hemani Uppal, and Mr. Chander Dev Manhas.
