Curfew Enforced in Leh for Fourth Consecutive Day
Authorities maintain tight security as investigations continue into September 24 violence, with multiple FIRs and preventive measures in Leh and Kargil.
Leh, Sep 27: Curfew continued for the fourth consecutive day in Leh town on Saturday after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, detained under the National Security Act (NSA), was reportedly shifted to Jodhpur Jail in Rajasthan, though official confirmation is still awaited.
Wangchuk was arrested on Friday for allegedly inciting violence on September 24, which led to the deaths of four protesters and injuries to 70 others when security forces opened fire in self-defense. The administration had also suspended mobile internet services in Leh as a precaution.
Authorities are investigating the role of outsiders, including youth from Nepal and Doda, in the violence and the source of petrol bombs used to target BJP and Hill Council offices, as well as security vehicles. Over 50 rioters have been detained, and multiple FIRs have been registered. Two Congress councillors are also under scrutiny.
The UT administration has ordered the closure of schools, colleges, Anganwadi centres, and coaching institutes in Leh till September 28, while Section 163 restrictions have been imposed in Kargil to curb gatherings. ITBP, CRPF, and Ladakh Police continue to patrol sensitive areas, ensuring strict enforcement of curfew.
Preparations are underway for meetings between representatives of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) and the Ministry of Home Affairs to discuss the unrest and related administrative issues.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has also cancelled the FCRA registration of SECMOL, an organization founded by Wangchuk, citing alleged financial discrepancies and violations of the FCRA Act.
Authorities have warned that those involved in instigating and participating in the violence could face action under the Public Safety Act (PSA), emphasizing zero tolerance for unrest in the Union Territory.
