Dean & Principal Dr. Shailla Canni, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi College of Nursing, conferred National Florence Nightingale Award

Dr. Shailla Canni is the only awardee from Jammu and Kashmir who has been conferred this prestigious President Award.

JAMMU, Sept 15: Dean, and Principal, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi College of Nursing (SMVDCoN) Dr. Shailla Cannie,  has been conferred with the prestigious National Florence Nightingale Award.
The Award was presented by President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, in a virtual ceremony held today at NIC Center, Jammu. The award consisted of a cash amount of Rs 50,000, a certificate, and a medal. It is the highest national distinction awarded to nurses.

The National Florence Nightingale Award is a special recognition for outstanding performance and excellence in the field of the nursing profession. It also recognizes exemplary service or a pioneering spirit in the areas of public health or nursing education. The Award is given to outstanding nursing personnel employed in Central, State/UTs, private, missionary, and voluntary organizations. She has demonstrated a high level of dedication and competency in her work over years of her service and has brought laurels to the college.

The Award becomes more significant as the World Health Organization had designated 2020 as the Year of the Nurse & Midwife to mark the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of Modern Nursing.

As head of a prestigious Nursing Institution of J&K, Dr. Shailla Cannie has been working for the development of the nursing profession through the delivery of quality nursing education for over more than 20 years in UT. She has worked under various capacities in different institutions across J&K. Since 2016, she is the Dean and Principal of SMVDCoN established by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) in 2016.

Dr. Cannie is a great example to others. Her inspiration and motivation have built a strong team to provide quality nursing education to students. She is an asset to the organization. Her efforts and professional dedication have raised the name and fame of the prestigious institution i.e. SMVDCoN.
On being conferred the prestigious award, LG Manoj Sinha congratulated Dr. Cannie and appreciated her sincere efforts for the development of the girl child and the society. Major General SK Sharma (retired), Chairman, Governing Body (GB), SMVDCoN and Member, SMVDSB, Ramesh Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, SMVDSB, and members of the GB of SMVDCN also lauded Dr. Shailla Cannie for this auspicious recognition.

The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind conferred the National Florence Nightingale Awards 2020 to 51 awardees at a virtual ceremony, in the presence of Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, and Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, Union Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare.

Congratulating all the health care workers and nurses, The President noted ancient Indian traditions of service and helping the needy which are reflected in the service of our nurses. The President exemplified the selfless contribution of nurses in the gallant fight against COVID-19 as well as their hard work in accelerating the national COVID Vaccination Programme. He added that more than one crore vaccine doses per day have become possible by the exemplary devotion of our nurses. “Your hard work is a ray of hope and guides people towards the light from darkness,” he said. Paying tribute to those who lost their lives, he observed, “Nation will be indebted to your service.”

The President underlined various initiatives taken by the Government such as Midwifery service and insurance scheme under Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyaan Yojana for the health workers. As a vital element in health care delivery, the President acknowledged nurses as the first link between the public and the health care system.
