Delhi Air Quality Improves to ‘Poor’ as Temperature Plummets to 5.7°C

Northwesterly winds ease pollution slightly, but Delhi records lowest November temperature in three years

New Delhi, Dec 01 : Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) improved marginally on Monday, standing at 300 in the ‘poor’ category, slightly higher than Sunday’s 279 reading. This ended the city’s recent streak of ‘very poor’ air quality, aided by strong northwesterly winds dispersing accumulated pollutants across Delhi, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh.

Key Highlights:

AQI Status: Of 38 monitoring stations, 23 still recorded ‘very poor’ levels, with Nehru Nagar topping the list at 354 and NSIT Dwarka recording the lowest at 202. Other hotspots included Rohini (343), Bawana (339), RK Puram (338), and Punjabi Bagh (329).

Weather Impact: Strong winds of 10–15 km/hr from the mountains helped clear the skies on Sunday, reducing pollutant concentration across the region.

Temperature Plunge: Safdarjung station recorded Delhi’s lowest November temperature in three years at 5.7°C, 4.6°C below normal, continuing a trend of unusually cold conditions this month.

Experts noted that while wind has temporarily improved air quality, the persistent winter chill and ongoing pollution sources could maintain health risks for residents in the coming days.
