Delhi HC Flags ‘Derogatory, Communal’ Posts; Seeks Action Against Rana Ayyub Over Tweets on Hindu Deities, Savarkar

Court seeks replies from Centre, police, and X over alleged objectionable social media posts

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has directed authorities, including the Centre, Delhi Police, and social media platform X, to examine and act on alleged objectionable posts shared by journalist Rana Ayyub.

During the hearing, the court remarked that certain tweets referring to Hindu deities and freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar appeared “derogatory, inflammatory, and communal” in nature. Notices have been issued, seeking responses from all concerned parties by April 10.

The matter came up following a plea by advocate Amita Sachdeva, who alleged that the posts not only hurt religious sentiments but also promoted anti-national narratives. The complaint further claimed that one of the tweets included controversial remarks about Savarkar, portraying him in a negative light.

The court clarified that its observations are preliminary, and a detailed examination will take place after responses are submitted. Further proceedings in the case are expected later this week.
