Delhi Police Arrest 3 More in Turkman Gate Stone-Pelting Case, Arrest Tally Reaches 16
Police identify 30 suspects using CCTV and bodycam footage; raids underway, court remands eight accused to judicial custody
New Delhi, Jan 10: Delhi Police have arrested three more individuals in connection with the stone pelting incident at Turkman Gate that followed a demolition drive by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) near a mosque. With the latest arrests, the total number of accused held in the case has risen to 16, police said on Friday.
The newly arrested accused have been identified as Mohd. Naved, Mohd. Faiz and Mohd. Ubaidullah. Police officials said that investigations have so far identified at least 30 individuals allegedly involved in the violence, based on CCTV footage and videos circulating on social media.
Police teams have launched raids at multiple locations to apprehend the remaining suspects. Officials are also analysing footage from police body cameras, including a video recorded before the stone-pelting began when encroachments were being removed, which may have captured some of the rioters.
In a related development, Delhi Police are preparing to issue a summons to Samajwadi Party MP Mohibbullah Nadvi, asking him to join the investigation. Police said Nadvi was present at the site shortly before the violence erupted and remained in the area despite repeated requests from senior officers to leave.
The demolition drive near Turkman Gate, close to Ramlila Maidan, was carried out in the early hours of January 7 following directions from the Delhi High Court. Police said the operation was conducted after multiple coordination meetings with members of the Aman Committee and local stakeholders to ensure peace.
Meanwhile, the Tis Hazari court on Friday remanded eight accused to judicial custody till January 21. Judicial Magistrate First Class Sayesha Chaddha passed the order after the accused were produced following fresh arrests in the case. The accused remanded to judicial custody include Imran Farrukh, Imran Sultan, Mohd. Affan, Amir Hamza, Mohd. Ubaid Ullah, Shahnawaz, Mohd. Athar and Mohd. Adil.
Delhi Police have stated that further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.
