Delhi University’s Sri Venkateswara College Closed After Satya Niketan Building Collapse
Authorities suspend classes on September 7 as rescue operations continue near the university campus
NEW DELHI, Sept 7: Sri Venkateswara College of the University of Delhi has been closed on Monday following the collapse of a building in the Satya Niketan area, amid concerns over the safety of students and residents in the vicinity.
The college announced the closure on September 6 after the five storey building collapsed in the densely populated locality opposite the campus. The decision was taken as authorities continued rescue and relief operations at the site.
The collapse claimed at least six lives and injured several people, while rescue teams continued searching through the debris for those who may still be trapped. Officials said the building had been undergoing renovation and was being used as student accommodation.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of ageing and renovated structures located around educational institutions and student residential areas.
Rescue personnel have been using heavy machinery and sniffer dogs to search the debris. At least 12 people had been rescued as operations continued, according to reports.
The building was more than five decades old and had reportedly reopened for student tenants in August despite renovation work remaining incomplete. Officials are examining whether construction activity and water accumulation in the basement contributed to the collapse.
The incident has also prompted calls for stronger structural safety measures. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced plans for a policy requiring regular structural audits and safety certifications for buildings used by the public, including facilities accommodating students.
The temporary closure of Sri Venkateswara College is aimed at ensuring the safety of students and staff while authorities assess the situation around the affected area.
