DGP Directs District Police to Monitor Social Media, Strengthen Security Measures Across J&K

J&K Police Chief stresses social media monitoring, anti-terror operations, and community outreach in security review meet

Srinagar, Sept 12: Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat on Thursday directed all district police chiefs to closely monitor social media platforms to prevent the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and rumors that could disrupt public peace and order in the Union Territory.

The directive came during a high-level security review meeting held at the Police Control Room in Srinagar, where the DGP took a comprehensive assessment of the prevailing security landscape. According to a police spokesperson, senior officers, including zonal Inspector Generals, range DIGs, and heads of specialized wings, briefed the DGP on the current operational scenario, anti-terror measures, and recent law and order developments.

Prabhat stressed that emerging challenges in the digital space require sharper vigilance, as social media has increasingly been exploited by anti-national elements to spread propaganda, incite unrest, and mislead communities. He instructed district heads to intensify surveillance, track suspicious activity online, and act swiftly against those attempting to destabilize peace through digital platforms.

The meeting also reviewed ongoing counter-terror operations, security at vulnerable establishments, and deployment patterns in sensitive zones. The DGP directed officers to strengthen area domination exercises, ensure fool-proof security arrangements, and focus on preventive policing to minimize risks of potential threats.

Highlighting the importance of police-public cooperation, Prabhat expressed concern over the rising general crime in certain districts and called for robust community policing initiatives. He emphasized greater public outreach programmes, aiming to build trust, encourage information-sharing, and improve responsiveness to citizen grievances.

The DGP noted that effective policing in the Union Territory depends not only on operational preparedness but also on the confidence and participation of local communities. He urged officers to adopt a balanced approach that combines firm security measures with proactive engagement to sustain peace and stability.

The meeting concluded with the DGP reiterating that J&K Police remains committed to safeguarding the Union Territory from both physical and digital threats, while ensuring that the rights and safety of citizens are fully protected.
