Dhaka Summons Indian Envoy After New Delhi Flags Security Concerns
Move follows MEA’s warning over extremist threats and safety of Indian mission in Bangladesh
New Delhi/Dhaka, Dec 30 : Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, Reaz Hamidullah, has been summoned to Dhaka for urgent consultations amid growing strain in bilateral ties, according to media reports. The envoy returned to Dhaka on Monday night following an “urgent call” from the Bangladesh foreign ministry.
Reports indicate that the recall was prompted by recent developments affecting India–Bangladesh relations. “He has been called to Dhaka on an urgent basis for discussions on the current state of bilateral relations,” a report said.
The move comes days after India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned the Bangladesh envoy in New Delhi to convey strong concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Bangladesh.
On December 17, the MEA said it had drawn Hamidullah’s attention to the activities of certain extremist elements who have publicly announced plans to create a security situation around the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
India also rejected what it described as a false narrative being circulated by extremist groups regarding recent incidents in Bangladesh. The MEA expressed concern that the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has neither carried out a thorough investigation nor shared substantive evidence with India on the matter.
New Delhi urged the Yunus-led interim administration to ensure the safety and security of Indian diplomatic missions and personnel in Bangladesh, in line with its obligations under international diplomatic conventions.
The latest developments underscore rising diplomatic unease between the two neighbours at a time of heightened regional sensitivities.
