Various prominent senior Congress leaders and Congress workers participated in the Satyagraha to raise their voice against the Centre on the issue. The protesters raised slogans against the BJP government and criticised the BJP leadership heavily for ‘abuse of power’.
Along with Yogesh Sawhney,Prominent leaders who joined Satyagraha and held two hours long dharna included Kanta Bhan, Th. Manmohan Singh, Rajnish Sharma, Uday Bhanu Chib, Suresh Dogra, Pranav Shagotra, Sanjeev Panda, Satish Sharma, Sahil Sharma, Rajvir Singh, Utam Singh, Dr. Ramakant Khajuria, Pawan Dev Singh, Ritu Choudhary (Corporator), Michael Wazir, Nassir Masih, Jagdish Kumar, Rajesh Sharma, Atul Sharma, Amrit Bali, Pawan Sharma, Vijay Shastri, Ashok Khajuria, Chander Sheikhar, Anil Kumar, Janak Raj, Dewan Chand, K.K. Jogi, Vijay Singh , Sunil Kumar, Ram Magotra, Sahil Dogra, Arif Malik, Surinder Kumar, Ajay Lakhotra(NSUI), Mangat Ram, Rakesh Kumar, Jattin, Salik, Iqbal Singh, Raj Kumar Sodhi, Ravi Pangotra and others.
Speaking at the protest, Former Minister J&K Yogesh Sawhney General Secretary PCC InCharge District President Jammu (U) accused the BJP government of exploiting their political powers vested in them by virtue of forming the government at the Centre to target the Congress leadership and in an attempt to weaken the opposition and distract the public attention away from their failures. Sawhney stated that the BJP is misusing government agencies like the ED to constantly harass Congress President Smt Sonia Gandhi as she continues to be summoned before ED for long rounds of questioning that last hours at a time. Furthermore, the Congress party is being brutally targeted, said Sawhney, as Congress leaders are not allowed to raise their voices against the blunders of the Modi Government. The fact that Delhi Police detained Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi after he sat on a Dharna is evidence of this policy of suppression being followed by this authoritarian government. The government wants to suppress any voice of reason that wants to fight for the right and point out their faults, Sawhney said.
Sawhney further spoke on the matter and condemned the Modi government for killing democracy in the country and turning India into a police state. He said that the BJP government feels empowered as they control central agencies in the country and they can use them to defame and harass their opposition which is the Congress party. The summoning of Congress President by ED is a similar tactic. Modi government is good at trying to distract the people from the real issues and concerns which are plaguing the country at the moment, be it the issue of extreme inflation or economic distress among the masses. He added that Congress leaders are not even allowed to step outside of their houses to exercise our democratic and constitutional right to peacefully protest and register our opposition to the BJP government’s abuse of power. Many things are happening here at the same time. One, the government is using central institutions to carry out their political vendetta. Two, there is an unwarranted and brutal suppression of democratic rights across the country. Three, the BJP government is behaving like a dictatorship where they control all the narratives. The Congress party strongly stands against the Modi government on all accounts and will not stop our campaign until the government puts a stop to their totalitarian policies and actions, said Sawhney.
