Indian Organ Donation Day is observed on 27th November to honour the contributions that dead donors and their families made to society. The major goal is to increase awareness of the value of organ donation and to motivate people to make a commitment to it. To help save more lives, this day promotes healthy organ donation after death. In the first-ever organ donation, Ronald Lee Herrick gave a kidney to his identical twin brother in 1954. The treatment was carried out by Dr. Joseph Murray, who also received the 1990 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his contributions to the field of organ transplantation. Organ donations, such as those for the kidneys, heart, pancreas, eyes, lungs, etc., can help people with chronic conditions live longer lives. Many people pass away because healthy organs that could have saved them are not available. Donating one’s healthy organs after passing away is referred to as organ donation. People with any chronic conditions can be saved by donating their kidneys, hearts, pancreas, lungs, livers, and eyes. By commemorating World Organ Donation Day, people would realize that volunteering to give one’s organs after death can significantly improve the lives of many individuals who are eagerly awaiting. The goal of the day is to encourage and sensitize individuals to donate organs in order to save more lives. The marvel of the twentieth century that is organ transplantation has helped hundreds of thousands of patients around the world. Up to eight lives could be saved by an organ donor, while tissue donation could improve the lives of more than 100 individuals. It is seen as an honour and a social gesture to donate an organ. A brain-dead owner or a living donor can donate an organ. By committing to give their heart, kidney, pancreas, lungs, liver, intestines, hands, face, tissues, bone marrow, and stem cells, one individual can prevent up to eight people from passing away from chronic illness. Anyone, regardless of age, caste, or religion, can volunteer to be an organ donor, which is equivalent to giving someone a new life. Every year, about 5 lakh individuals in India pass away due to organ failure, compared to 2 lakh deaths from liver illness and 50,000 deaths from heart ailments. Only 5,000 of the 1.5 lakh individuals waiting for kidney transplants actually receive one. The introduction and dissemination of Covid-19 have posed significant difficulties for the medical system. The sickness cost the nation hundreds of thousands of lives, but it also had a significant impact on those with ailments that weren’t caused by COVID. Giving an organ is similar to giving a life. However, organ donation is still mostly unknown and poorly understood. People may believe that the only organs that can be donated are the kidneys, liver, or heart. Donating organs is much more than that, though. Giving someone else life without expecting anything in return has no age restrictions. Organ donation does not take age into account. The family consent system and the presumed consent system are the two organ donation methods now used worldwide. In India, the practice of donating organs from deceased donors is steadily gaining ground.
It is a kind gesture on the part of the donor to donate an organ, which can help save a life and possibly enhance the quality of life for many people. One of the greatest accomplishments of contemporary science is organ transplantation. The effort to increase awareness so that more people sign up to donate their organs is equally important. A public awareness campaign should be led by celebrities and other role models. Employ the aid of religious authorities to ensure that family members of brain-dead patients do not resist allowing the organs of their loved ones to be collected. Eventually, everyone will die. However, by donating an organ, you have the opportunity to save another person’s life. In fact, we all have the chance to step out and declare that we would offer our priceless organs through organ donation.
