Gunman fires near Farooq Abdullah outside wedding venue, security men overpower accused
Jammu, 12-03-2026: According to reports quoting sources, National Conference president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, along with Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, escaped unhurt after a gunman allegedly opened fire outside a marriage venue in Jammu’s Greater Kailash area on Wednesday night. Police said the accused was overpowered on the spot and taken into custody for questioning, while an investigation has been launched into the security breach.
Sources said the incident took place when Farooq Abdullah, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and Chief Minister’s adviser Nasir Aslam Wani were leaving the function after attending the marriage of a party leader’s son. The suspected attacker, identified in reports as Kamal Singh Jamwal of Purani Mandi, was allegedly waiting outside the venue and moved close to the protected entourage before being intercepted by security personnel.
As per the reports, two members of the security wing of Jammu and Kashmir Police, an inspector and a sub-inspector, acted swiftly and overpowered the man. Even so, he reportedly managed to fire one round before being fully disarmed. No injuries were reported in the incident, and officials were quoted as saying that the accused appeared to be in an intoxicated condition.
The incident has triggered serious questions over the security arrangements around a former Chief Minister protected under the Z plus NSG category. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reacted sharply, saying his father had a “very close shave” and questioning how an armed man could get within point-blank range despite such a high security cover.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary also described the episode as a major security lapse. According to reported remarks, he questioned how a person carrying a weapon could reach so close when senior constitutional functionaries and protectees were present at the venue. Police, meanwhile, have indicated that a detailed probe is underway and that there is no terror angle at this stage.
The episode has sent shockwaves through political and security circles. More official details are expected as the investigation progresses.
