Dr Farooq Abdullah-led Jammu and Kashmir leaders to meet Election Commission of India seeking early polls
Government should conduct elections and return Statehood respectfully: Dr Farooq Abdullah
11-03-2023 : The leaders from Jammu and Kashmir met at the National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah’s residence in Jammu and decided to meet the Election Commission of India (ECI) to seek early assembly polls in the Union Territory. After the day-long deliberations, Dr. Abdullah addressed the press conference and announced that a delegation of J&K leaders will leave for Delhi to apprise all national political parties about the current situation in the Union Territory.
The leaders expressed their concern over the delay in conducting assembly elections despite the improvement in the situation in J&K. They also questioned the government’s claim of improvement in the situation when the G20 meeting is planned in the UT in May.
Dr. Abdullah further added that the delegation will inform the national leadership about issues like land eviction drives, recruitment scams, and levying taxes to help them understand the issue and raise it appropriately in the upcoming parliament session. He also emphasized that the assembly needs to take a call on property tax or any other tax.
The press conference was attended by prominent leaders from various political parties, including Harshdev Singh, Viqar Rasool Wani, Raman Bhalla, Taranjit Singh Tony, M Y Taragami, Manish Sahwany, and Amrik Singh Reen.
Dr. Abdullah also clarified that DPAP President Ghulam Nabi Azad was not invited to the meeting, but the doors are open for all. The leaders’ decision to meet the ECI and seek early assembly polls indicates their growing dissatisfaction with the current administration’s delay in conducting elections and their desire to regain statehood status.
