Dr. Sudhir, Central University of Jammu Honoured for his Research on Antimicrobial Resistance at IISc, Bangalore
Jammu, 10 Nov 2025: Dr. Sudhir Singh, Assistant Professor at the Centre for Molecular Biology, Central University of Jammu (CUJ), was recently honoured for his pioneering research on the drug Lamotrigine at a prestigious international symposium held at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.
The three-day event, titled “ASM-IISc Symposium on One Health Approach to Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), was jointly organized by IISc and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), USA. The symposium brought together leading scientists, clinicians, policymakers, and industry experts from around the world to address the escalating threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)—a global health challenge projected to cost nearly 3.5% of the world’s GDP by 2050. India is expected to bear a significant portion of this burden, with a potential annual GDP loss exceeding 5%.
Dr. Singh presented his research findings through an abstract titled “Lamotrigine Mediated Growth Recovery of ΔrsgA Mutant in Escherichia coli.” His work explores the potential antibacterial properties of Lamotrigine; a drug traditionally used for neurological conditions. During his presentation, Dr. Singh elaborated on the mechanistic insights of Lamotrigine and its promising role in combating bacterial resistance. His presentation was met with wide appreciation from both participants and organizers. In recognition of his contribution, Dr. Singh was felicitated with a memento by Prof. Helen Boucher from Tufts University School of Medicine, USA.
The symposium emphasized the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health in tackling AMR and highlighted innovative approaches like Dr. Singh’s that could pave the way for future breakthroughs.Such achievements not only bring pride to the Central University of Jammu but also underscore the vital role of Indian scientists in addressing global health challenges. Dr. Sudhir Singh acknowledged the support provided by the Central University of Jammu. The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of CU Jammu, Prof. Sanjeev Jain, and the Director, CMB, Dr. Narendra K Bairwa, congratulated Dr. Sudhir Singh, CMB for his excellent research work and representation of Central university of Jammu in the prestigious symposium at the IISc.
