EC Schedules Rajya Sabha Elections for 24 Seats on June 18
Polling to Take Place Across 10 States as Terms of Sitting Members End
NEW DELHI, May 22: The Election Commission on Friday announced the schedule for elections to 24 Rajya Sabha seats spread across 10 states, with polling set to take place on June 18.
According to the Commission, the elections are being conducted as the terms of several sitting members of the Upper House are ending between June 21 and July 19. The electoral exercise will cover seats from states including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.
As per the notification, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka will each witness elections for four Rajya Sabha seats, while Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will go to polls for three seats each. Jharkhand will elect representatives for two seats, whereas Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram will have polling for one seat each.
The Election Commission stated that the last date for filing nomination papers is June 8. Scrutiny of nominations will take place the following day, while candidates can withdraw their nominations within the prescribed timeline before polling day.
The Rajya Sabha elections are conducted through an indirect voting system in which elected members of the respective state legislative assemblies cast their votes to choose representatives for the Upper House of Parliament.
