Education Reformist Sonam Wangchuk Begins 7-Day Hunger Strike for Environmental Protection in Ladakh
Education Icon Sonam Wangchuk's Hunger Strike Amplifies the Need for Lifestyle Changes and Environmental Preservation
18-06-2023 : Sonam Wangchuk, a renowned engineer and education reformist known for inspiring a character in the Bollywood film “3 Idiots,” has embarked on a seven-day hunger strike in Ladakh. The hunger strike, called a ‘climatic fast,’ is part of Wangchuk’s ongoing campaign to protect the fragile environment of Ladakh. This is the second time in the past six months that he has undertaken such a fast.
Wangchuk’s hunger strike coincides with talks scheduled between the Ministry of Home Affairs and a joint delegation representing the Leh-based Apex body and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). The delegation is advocating for full statehood for Ladakh, constitutional safeguards under the sixth schedule, separate Lok Sabha seats for the two districts, and recruitment and job reservations for the youth of Ladakh. On the first day of his fast, Wangchuk expressed his hope for the success of these talks, emphasizing the importance of peaceful resolution to the region’s issues.
Ladakh is a region of immense significance due to its sensitive environment and its proximity to China and Pakistan. Wangchuk stressed the need for finding solutions to Ladakh’s challenges without disturbance or agitation, considering the region’s delicate geopolitical situation. While acknowledging the positive development that Ladakh has experienced since becoming a union territory in 2019, Wangchuk voiced concerns about the loss of safeguards for the environment, land, culture, and democratic rights.
Beyond addressing local issues, Wangchuk’s hunger strike aims to draw global attention, particularly from city dwellers, to the urgent need for lifestyle changes that prioritize environmental preservation. He urged people living in urban areas to embrace simpler lifestyles so that those in the mountains, like Ladakh, can continue to survive. Wangchuk’s fast serves as an alarm bell, alerting the world to the necessity of reversing global warming, which poses threats to mountains, glaciers, and the lives of people and animals.
Furthermore, Wangchuk’s fast aligns with the ‘Mission Life’ initiative led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This initiative aims to mobilize at least one billion Indians and global citizens to take individual and collective action in protecting and preserving the environment from 2022 to 2027. Wangchuk referred to the website ‘ilivesimply.org,’ which was launched four years ago, urging people to visit the site and take a pledge to change their lifestyles. He set a target of at least seven lakh (seven hundred thousand) pledges, and once this goal is achieved, he will end his fast.
However, Wangchuk stated that if the target number of pledges is not met within the seven-day duration, he will continue his fast and conduct additional climatic fasts to mobilize support for the cause.
Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike represents his unwavering commitment to environmental protection, raising awareness about the need for sustainable living, and advocating for Ladakh’s rights and safeguards. His actions serve as a call to action for individuals and governments alike to prioritize the preservation of our planet for the benefit of future generations.
