Election Commission Lifts Model Code of Conduct, Paving the Way for New Governance in Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana

Political Landscape Shifts: ECI Removes Model Code of Conduct, Allowing Free Engagement for Newly Elected Leaders

JAMMU, Oct 10: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially lifted the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) following the announcement of results for the recent Assembly elections in Haryana and the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. This decision marks a significant moment in the electoral process, as the MCC was designed to maintain the integrity of the electoral environment during the campaign period.

In a directive issued today, the ECI informed the Cabinet Secretary and the Chief Secretaries of both Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir that the Model Code of Conduct is no longer in effect. The MCC had been enforced since the announcement of the election schedule and was instrumental in ensuring fair campaigning and appropriate conduct by political parties throughout the election process.

The ECI’s order emphasized that the MCC served as a regulatory framework aimed at fostering a level playing field for all candidates and political entities involved in the elections. By imposing restrictions on certain activities—such as the announcement of new schemes or projects by the government, the use of government resources for campaigning, and the conduct of public officials—the MCC sought to prevent any undue advantage during the electoral competition.

With the results now declared by the Returning Officers in both regions, the ECI has deemed it appropriate to withdraw the restrictions imposed under the code with immediate effect. This lifting allows political parties and candidates to engage freely in post-election activities, including the formation of government and coalition discussions.

The conclusion of the MCC phase is crucial as it signals a return to normalcy in the political landscape of Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana, allowing newly elected representatives to commence their governance duties. Moreover, it underscores the commitment of the Election Commission to uphold democratic principles and ensure transparent electoral processes in the country.
