NEW YORK, Sept 9: Elena Rybakina secured her place at the top of the women’s tennis rankings after defeating Zheng Qinwen in the US Open quarter finals on Wednesday.
The Kazakh player overcame the Chinese sixth seed 6-3, 6-2 to reach the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows. The victory ensured that Rybakina will become the new world No. 1 when the updated rankings are released.
Rybakina controlled the contest from the beginning, using her powerful serve and aggressive groundstrokes to keep Zheng under pressure. She converted key opportunities and maintained her composure throughout the match.
