Ex-J&K Cooperative Bank MD Convicted for Forging Birth Date to Extend Tenure: CBK
Crime Branch Kashmir probe reveals seven year illegal service extension, court awards two year imprisonment for forgery and cheating.
SRINAGAR, Nov 4: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch Kashmir (CBK) has secured the conviction of Mohammad Shafi Banday, former Managing Director of the J&K Cooperative Central Land Development Limited, for forging his date of birth to unlawfully extend his tenure in government service.
Officials said the case originated from a complaint alleging that Banday manipulated his birth records, showing his date of birth as September 1, 1939, instead of his actual year of birth, 1934, using a fake birth certificate.
A detailed investigation by the Crime Branch confirmed that Banday’s actual date of birth was June 26, 1932, proving that he had illegally overstayed in service by more than seven years, causing wrongful financial gain to himself and losses to the state exchequer.
Following the probe, the CBK filed a chargesheet before the Court of the City Judge, Srinagar. After a full trial, the court found Banday guilty under Sections 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), and 471 (using forged documents as genuine) of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC).
Banday was sentenced to two years of simple imprisonment on each count and fined ₹5,000 per offence, with all sentences to run concurrently.
The EOW welcomed the verdict, describing it as a strong deterrent against corruption and document manipulation in public service.
“This conviction underscores our unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and integrity in governance,” an EOW spokesperson said.
The agency reaffirmed its resolve to pursue cases that erode public trust and cause financial losses to the government exchequer.
