Ex-J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik is asked by CBI to respond to inquiries on insurance “scams.”
21-04-2023 : Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik has been summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to answer queries related to an insurance scam, according to officials. Malik confirmed that he has been asked to clarify certain matters and has provided dates for his availability. The CBI had previously examined him in connection with the alleged scam last year.
The probe agency had registered two FIRs in April last year based on corruption allegations raised by Malik regarding the awarding of contracts for a group medical insurance scheme for government employees and work related to the Kiru hydroelectric power project in Jammu and Kashmir. Reliance General Insurance and Trinity Re-Insurance Brokers Limited were named as accused in the FIR related to the controversial health insurance scheme for Jammu and Kashmir government employees, which was cleared by Malik in a state administrative council meeting on August 31, 2018.
It was alleged that there were deviations from government norms in the contract awarded to Reliance General Insurance, including the absence of an online tender and removal of the original condition that the vendor should have experienced working in the state, among others. The scheme, which was supposed to be operational from October 1, 2018, was subsequently scrapped after allegations of irregularities surfaced.
Malik had made a sensational claim that he was offered a bribe of Rs 300 crore for clearing two files after he became the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. One file belonged to Ambani and the other to an RSS-affiliated individual who was a minister in the previous Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP-BJP coalition government and claimed to be close to the Prime Minister.
