Farooq Abdullah Congratulates First South Asian NYC Mayor, Calls Him a Beacon of Hope

Srinagar, Nov 5: National Conference president and former Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah extended heartfelt congratulations to Zohran Mamdani for his historic and emphatic victory in the New York City mayoral elections, describing it as a defining moment for inclusive politics and collective human progress.

In a statement issued by the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, Dr. Abdullah lauded Mamdani’s triumph as a “beacon of hope in an era of increasing polarization,” commending his ability to unite diverse communities through empathy, equity, and purpose. “Zohran Mamdani’s stunning victory is not merely a personal achievement but a clarion call for collective progress,” Abdullah said, reflecting on the global significance of the election outcome.

He noted that Mamdani’s campaign, rooted in compassion and social justice, resonated deeply with people across ethnic and ideological lines, offering an alternative to the politics of division and distrust. “His election sends a universal message of unity, compassion, and courage. It reminds us that when we reject hate and embrace humanity, we build bridges that endure the test of time,” he observed.

Abdullah emphasized that Mamdani’s victory symbolizes the power of democratic participation and the triumph of shared ideals over fear. “This success demonstrates that leadership built on integrity, inclusivity, and empathy will always prevail. It is an inspiration for young people across the world, including those in Jammu and Kashmir, to believe that progress comes through perseverance and moral conviction,” the NC president said.

The veteran leader also underlined that Mamdani’s rise reflects the increasing global recognition of South Asians, particularly Indian-origin citizens, who continue to excel in diverse fields through hard work, innovation, and a deep sense of service. “From politics to technology, from culture to academia, Indians across the world are showcasing the values of tolerance and determination that define our civilizational ethos,” Abdullah remarked.

Mamdani, the 34-year-old Indian-origin democratic socialist, scripted history by becoming the first South Asian, the youngest, and the first Muslim to be elected as the Mayor of New York City. His grassroots campaign, which focused on affordable housing, public welfare, and social justice, galvanized an unprecedented level of civic engagement in one of the world’s most politically vibrant cities.

Dr. Abdullah said that such victories hold significance beyond geographical borders, as they reaffirm the universal belief in equality, human dignity, and opportunity. “In a time when societies across the world are struggling with division, intolerance, and social inequality, Mamdani’s message of inclusivity offers renewed faith in democracy’s healing potential,” he added.
