Farooq Abdullah Hopes Centre Will Honor J&K People’s Aspirations, Restore Statehood
Farooq Abdullah expresses optimism over J&K statehood restoration, emphasizes revival of tourism post-Pahalgam attack
Srinagar, Sep 13: National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday expressed hope that the Centre would recognize the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and restore the region’s statehood.
Speaking at a golf tournament in Pahalgam, where around 50 golfers from across India are participating, the three-time former chief minister said, “God willing, that will also happen one day. We are hopeful that Delhi will pay attention to it. The Prime Minister will see to it that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have their statehood restored.”
Addressing concerns over recent controversies like Hazratbal and incidents in Doda, Abdullah noted that such issues have been part of Jammu and Kashmir’s history since 1947. “However, we have to move forward. Nothing is static. God willing, the situation has improved here, and I am hopeful the leadership will focus on the aspirations of the people,” he added.
The Hazratbal shrine controversy erupted on September 5 after a plaque bearing the Ashoka emblem was vandalized, sparking outrage among political parties. Similarly, tensions flared in Doda following the arrest of MLA Mehraj Malik under the PSA for allegedly disturbing public order.
On the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists, Abdullah said it severely impacted tourism in the valley. “Tourism is essential for sustaining Kashmir’s economy. The valley earns during the six months of tourist season and sustains itself in winter. The attack affected everyone, but the people of Kashmir were not behind it; the valley stood united against it,” he said.
Abdullah highlighted the golf tournament’s role in restoring public confidence. “The event sends a message across the country that Kashmir is safe and the situation has improved. We aim to dispel fear and encourage people to experience the valley’s hospitality,” he said.
This statement underlines Abdullah’s continued emphasis on statehood restoration, public safety, and economic revival through tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.
