Field Marshal Asim Munir Appointed Chief of Defence Forces Following 27th Amendment

Unified military command consolidates army, navy, and air force under Munir amid political tensions

Islamabad, Nov 29: Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has officially taken charge as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of Pakistan while continuing his role as Chief of Army Staff (COAS), following the ratification of the 27th Amendment to the Pakistani Constitution. The amendment abolishes the position of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) and creates a unified command, placing Munir at the apex of the army, navy, and air force for a fixed five year term.

The amendment grants Munir authority over Pakistan’s nuclear command structure, multi domain integration, and restructuring of the armed forces, while providing lifetime immunity from prosecution. The move has sparked widespread debate, raising concerns about the civil military balance in a country long shaped by military influence in politics.

Critics warn that the consolidation of power occurs amid political unrest, social turbulence, and strained regional security, as Pakistan navigates cross border tensions with India and Afghanistan and internal militancy challenges from groups like the TTP and BLA.

Supporters argue that a centralized command is essential for streamlined decision-making in an increasingly volatile regional environment, while opponents fear it further entrenches military dominance in Pakistan’s fragile political landscape.
