FIFA 2026: South Africa Shock South Korea to Script Historic World Cup Milestone
Maseko’s second-half strike seals landmark victory as Bafana Bafana book Round-of-32 clash against Canada
MONTERREY, June 25: South Africa scripted a memorable chapter in their football history by securing a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time with a hard fought 1-0 victory over South Korea in their final Group A match on Wednesday.
Few had expected the Bafana Bafana to progress after they opened their campaign with a disappointing defeat to Mexico. However, the African side showed remarkable resilience, recovering with a draw against the Czech Republic before producing a decisive performance against South Korea in Monterrey.
The victory ensured South Africa finished second in Group A and advanced to the Round of 32, where they will take on co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on June 28.
South Korea entered the contest knowing that a win would likely secure qualification, but coach Hong Myung-bo’s decision to leave star captain Son Heung-min on the bench raised eyebrows before kick-off.
The Asian side began brightly and nearly found an early breakthrough when stand-in captain Kim Min-jae powered a header toward goal, only for Aubrey Modiba to make a crucial clearance on the line. Lee Kang-in also threatened soon after, sending an effort narrowly wide.
After surviving the early pressure, South Africa gradually settled into the game and began creating opportunities of their own. Their attacking intent was evident, although a lack of composure in front of goal prevented them from capitalising.
The best chance of the opening half arrived in the 30th minute. Goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu parried a powerful strike from Thalente Mbatha straight into the path of Evidence Makgopa. With the goal at his mercy, the striker could only direct a tame effort back at the South Korean goalkeeper, allowing the visitors to escape.
Recognising the need for greater attacking urgency, Hong introduced Son Heung-min at the start of the second half as part of a triple substitution aimed at changing the course of the match.
The contest remained finely balanced after the restart. South Africa’s Thapelo Maseko squandered a promising opening, while South Korean forward Oh Hyeon-gyu forced goalkeeper Ronwen Williams into an important save at the opposite end.
As the match progressed, news emerged that Mexico were leading the Czech Republic in the other Group A fixture, increasing the stakes for both teams battling for the second qualification spot.
South Africa finally found the breakthrough in the 63rd minute. Tshepang Moremi delivered a precise cross into the area and Maseko made no mistake this time, calmly driving the ball inside the near post to spark celebrations among the South African supporters.
The goal transformed the atmosphere inside the stadium as South Africa moved closer to a historic achievement.
South Korea responded by committing more players forward in search of an equaliser. Son attempted to inspire a late comeback, while the Asian side pushed relentlessly in the closing stages.
However, the South African defence remained disciplined and organised, successfully repelling wave after wave of pressure. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams also produced a composed display to preserve his side’s slender advantage.
When the final whistle sounded, jubilant scenes followed as South Africa confirmed their first ever progression beyond the group stage of the World Cup.
The result completed an impressive turnaround for the African nation, which had been written off after its opening defeat. Through determination, tactical discipline and growing confidence, South Africa managed to overturn expectations and secure a place among the tournament’s last 32 teams.
Meanwhile, South Korea’s World Cup journey came to a disappointing end despite entering the tournament with high hopes and several experienced players. The defeat meant they missed out on qualification and were forced to exit at the group stage.
In the other Group A encounter, Mexico defeated the Czech Republic to finish top of the standings with a perfect nine points from three matches.
For South Africa, attention now turns to a high-profile knockout clash against Canada. Buoyed by their historic achievement and growing momentum, the Bafana Bafana will head into the next round believing they can continue their remarkable World Cup adventure.
