Five Missing as Landslide Destroys Several Homes in Uttarakhand

Heavy rains trigger landslide in Nandanagar; rescue operations underway as SDRF, NDRF rush to spot.

Gopeshwar, Sep 18: At least five people went missing after a massive landslide, triggered by relentless rains, swept away homes in Chamoli district’s Nandanagar region on Thursday.

According to the District Disaster Management Centre, the landslide struck Kuntri ward of Nagar Panchayat Nandanagar, demolishing around half a dozen houses. Seven people were inside at the time of the incident. While two were rescued alive, five remain unaccounted for.

Swift response teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with medical personnel and three ambulances, have been deployed for search and rescue operations.

Meanwhile, floods in the Mokh river added to the devastation, destroying six more houses in Dhurma village of the same area.

Nandanagar has been reeling under disaster threats for weeks. In August, land subsidence led to deep cracks in several houses, forcing residents to shift to safer locations.
