FM Sitharaman Says Budget Well Equipped to Handle Global Risks, Rules Out Revision of Estimates
Finance Minister says fiscal buffers remain strong despite geopolitical tensions and weather-related uncertainties, expressing confidence in India's economic outlook.
Mumbai, July 27: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has asserted that the Union government’s Budget estimates for 2026-27 remain on track despite rising geopolitical tensions and weather related challenges, saying there is no immediate need to revise the fiscal roadmap. She emphasised that adequate safeguards have been built into the Budget to protect the economy against external shocks.
Addressing an industry gathering, Sitharaman said the government had anticipated global uncertainties while preparing the Budget and ensured sufficient fiscal flexibility to respond to any unforeseen developments. She maintained that the Indian economy continues to demonstrate resilience, supported by strong domestic demand, sustained public investment and prudent financial management.
The Finance Minister noted that international developments, including geopolitical conflicts and supply-chain disruptions, continue to pose risks for economies worldwide. However, she said India’s macroeconomic fundamentals remain robust, allowing the government to maintain its fiscal commitments without altering budgetary projections.
Sitharaman also highlighted the Centre’s continued focus on infrastructure development, manufacturing, digital transformation and employment generation as key drivers of long-term economic growth. She said ongoing public investment is expected to support private sector participation and strengthen overall business confidence.
Referring to the impact of erratic weather patterns, the Finance Minister acknowledged that agriculture and certain sectors could face temporary challenges but stressed that contingency measures are already in place. She said the government remains prepared to extend support wherever required while ensuring fiscal discipline is maintained.
Economists believe the government’s decision to retain the existing Budget estimates signals confidence in revenue collections and economic momentum during the current financial year. Stable fiscal planning is also expected to reassure investors and financial markets amid continuing global uncertainty.
Industry representatives welcomed the Finance Minister’s remarks, stating that policy stability and predictable government spending are crucial for sustaining investment and accelerating economic expansion. Businesses are expected to closely monitor upcoming economic indicators and quarterly corporate earnings for further signals on growth prospects.
With India’s economy navigating a complex global environment, the government’s commitment to maintaining fiscal stability while supporting growth is likely to remain a key focus for businesses, investors and policymakers in the months ahead.
