Rajouri, 19-06-2024: A significant wildfire has engulfed the forests of Kotli and Nagoon in Rajouri district, marking a troubling start to the summer season with its fierce intensity. The blaze, which began early this morning, presents substantial challenges to containment efforts due to the extreme heat and the remote location of the affected area.
Responding swiftly to the emergency, the Forest Protection Force (FPF) under the leadership of Assistant Director Masood Ahmed, alongside personnel from the Forest Department, Social Forestry, and Fire and Emergency Services led by Station Incharge Maqbool Hussain, mobilized to the scene. Despite their relentless efforts throughout the day, the team encountered formidable obstacles in suppressing the fire.
The wildfire has inflicted extensive damage to the forest ecosystem and wildlife habitats. It has also exacerbated the local climate conditions, contributing to rising temperatures and increased levels of carbon dioxide and smoke in the air.
Expressing deep concern over the situation, Assistant Director Masood Ahmed emphasized the devastating impact of such fires on valuable forest resources and wildlife. “In this sweltering heat, wild animals and birds are suffering greatly,” he lamented.
Ahmed further underscored that some fires are deliberately ignited for personal gain, aggravating the crisis. He appealed to the public to refrain from such unlawful and harmful activities, emphasizing the severe consequences of setting fires in forests. “It is a serious offense to set fire to our forests. We urge everyone to assist in preventing and extinguishing fires to safeguard our precious green heritage,” he urged.
The department remains dedicated to combatting these fires around the clock, underscoring the critical importance of public cooperation. Immediate action in reporting and extinguishing naturally occurring fires can significantly mitigate damage and protect both the environment and wildlife.
