Former Congress Leader Azad Slams Critics for Questioning Relations with PM Modi

Azad Urges Political Opponents to Learn the ABCs of Politics in Response to Criticism

04-04-2023 : Former Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has responded to criticism from his political opponents after Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised him in a speech, stating that they have a “polluted mind” and need to return to “kindergarten to learn the ABCs of politics.” Azad, who served as the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, further criticized those who could not differentiate between farewell speeches and routine ones, saying their political acumen is “questionable at best.”

In an interview with news agency, Azad spoke about his good relations with the prime minister since his days as a general secretary of the BJP. He also spoke about his tenure as opposition leader in the Rajya Sabha and his opposition to the government on issues like Article 370, CAA, and hijab.

Azad criticized the frequent disruption caused by the Congress party in parliament and urged those who believe in boycotting parliament to introspect on whether they truly represent the people. He pointed out that during his tenure as opposition leader, he ensured that the house functioned, even if it was to the displeasure of some of his party leaders. He said bills are now passed quickly because MPs are not interested in debating, and questioned whether this lack of interest comes from MPs themselves or their leaders.

Azad’s book, “Azaad – An Autobiography,” covers his tenure as opposition leader and offers insight into his experiences with the prime minister both inside and outside of the house. He spoke about how he tried to raise issues of social, political, and economic importance and how he confronted the prime minister and his colleagues on the floor of the house. Despite using harsh words to criticize the government’s performance, Azad found the prime minister to be a great listener with a capacity to tolerate criticism.
