Former Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin Released After Police Questioning, Granted Station Bail
DMK leader questioned for nearly an hour in connection with an alleged objectionable remark made during a Cauvery protest before being granted station bail.
Tamil Nadu, Aug 05 : Former Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin was released on station bail on Tuesday after being questioned by police in connection with a case over an alleged objectionable remark made during a protest related to the Cauvery water dispute.
Police officials said Udhayanidhi was taken into custody from his residence in Chennai at around 11 a.m. and transported to the Sengipatti Police Station in Thanjavur district, nearly 27 kilometres away, where senior officers conducted the inquiry.
The questioning, which lasted for about an hour, focused on remarks allegedly made by the DMK leader during a recent demonstration over the sharing of Cauvery river water. Authorities had registered a case after complaints claimed the statement was inappropriate.
Following the interrogation, police granted him station bail in accordance with the Tamil Nadu government’s submission before the Madras High Court. He was released roughly nine hours after his arrest.
A large number of DMK supporters gathered outside the Sengipatti Police Station and welcomed Udhayanidhi after his release, raising slogans in support of the party leader.
The case has drawn political attention in Tamil Nadu, with the opposition criticising the proceedings while the ruling DMK has maintained that the legal process should be allowed to take its course. The development comes amid heightened political activity surrounding the long-standing Cauvery water-sharing issue, which remains a sensitive matter between the southern states.
Officials indicated that the investigation will continue and further legal proceedings will follow as required under the law.
