Former Director General of Police MM Khajooria passes away in Jammu

The life and legacy of MM Khajooria: a dynamic student leader turned outstanding police officer

15-02-2023 : On Wednesday evening, MM Khajooria, the former Director General of Police, passed away in Jammu after a brief illness. He is survived by three daughters, son-in-laws, six grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. His last rites will be held on Thursday (February 16, 2023) at Shastri Nagar Cremation Ground at 1:30 PM.

Khajooria was born on June 11, 1931, and was known as a dynamic student leader who led various movements, including the agitation for free education up to postgraduate level in the state. In 1954, he joined the police service of J&K State, becoming the first police officer in J&K to be inducted into the Indian Police Service. Khajooria was an outstanding police officer who held various sensitive posts, including the first Director General of J&K police from Jammu, and the first police officer to serve as the Special Commissioner after the Poonch agitation.

After retiring from the police service, he continued his public service, educating the masses, especially on terrorist-related issues. He was also a security analyst and a well-known TV and media personality, and authored several books and articles that were published in newspapers.

Khajooria’s death has been widely mourned in J&K by the police and civil society. Director General of Police J&K, Dilbag Singh, and all ranks of Jammu & Kashmir Police have expressed their condolences to the bereaved family and relatives of the deceased officer. DGP J&K Dilbag Singh said that Khajooria would be remembered for his services to the people and the department. Khajooria was the 2nd DGP of Jammu and Kashmir from January 16, 1985, to May 25, 1986.
