Former India Player Advises MI to Retain Hardik Amid Surya Captaincy Buzz
Former India cricketer advises stability in leadership amid growing buzz around Suryakumar Yadav
India, Mar 26 : With captaincy discussions resurfacing ahead of IPL 2026, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has urged the Mumbai Indians to continue with Hardik Pandya as captain, stressing the importance of consistency in leadership.
The franchise, known for its strong leadership core, also has experienced figures like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, both of whom have captained India in the T20 format. The earlier decision to replace Rohit with Hardik marked a major transition, ending a highly successful era that brought multiple IPL titles.
Despite initial criticism, Mumbai Indians showed improvement under Hardik’s leadership, reaching the playoffs last season. However, recent discussions around Suryakumar’s captaincy credentials following his success at the international level have sparked fresh debate over a possible leadership change.
Kaif cautioned against making impulsive decisions driven by trends, highlighting that Hardik is gradually settling into the role and has already delivered encouraging results. He noted that frequent changes in captaincy could disrupt team stability and affect performance.
Referring to past decisions, Kaif warned that shifting leadership based on current popularity could create uncertainty within the squad. While acknowledging Suryakumar as a capable option, he emphasised that the team management should avoid repeating earlier mistakes and instead back continuity.
Mumbai Indians are set to kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against the Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29.
