Former Rajya Sabha MP Ghulam Nabi Azad Supports Article 370 Removal but Concerned over Recent Terror Attacks

07-05-2023 : Ghulam Nabi Azad, the chief of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) and former Rajya Sabha MP, recently expressed his support for the removal of Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. He stated that although the decision was not in the interest of the people of the state, it did put an end to stone pelting and terrorism.

Azad also expressed his concern over the recent terror attacks in the UT, stating that such incidents are not in the interest of anyone and only lead to losses for the common people. He acknowledged that the Central government has been successful in controlling terrorism and stone pelting in the region, but also pointed out that some actions taken by the government were not in the interest of the people of the UT.

Azad’s party has recently gained support from various political activists, including JKNPP working president P K Ganju and general secretary Anita Thakur. This is seen as a significant boost for the DPAP ahead of the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections.

Despite the upcoming G20 summit in Kashmir, there has been an increase in terror incidents in the region. On April 20, terrorists attacked an Army truck in Poonch, killing five soldiers and injuring one. On May 5, terrorists triggered an IED blast during an encounter in the Rajouri district, killing five army personnel and injuring an officer.

In response, security forces have killed at least two terrorists and injured one, while continuing to search for others in the Kandi area of Jammu and Kashmir. Azad’s concern over these incidents highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the region and the need for continued efforts to ensure peace and security for all.
