Former Selector Backs Rohit Sharma to Lead India in 2027 World Cup, Sends Strong Message to BCCI

Srikkanth says Rohit and Kohli remain “irreplaceable” for India; praises Rohit’s fitness and form after stellar ODI series against Australia

India, Oct 27 : Rohit Sharma’s recent heroics against Australia have reignited the debate over his long term future in Indian cricket. Despite being replaced as India’s ODI captain by Shubman Gill, the 38-year-old opener proved that experience and class still matter, finishing as the Player of the Series in the three match contest.

Former India cricketer and selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth believes that Rohit should be a guaranteed pick for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, asserting that India “cannot play without him and Virat Kohli.”

“Rohit is a certainty for the 2027 World Cup. He’s fit, batting beautifully, and catching brilliantly at slips. What else do you need?” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

Srikkanth praised Rohit’s transformation, noting that the opener has shed 11 kilograms and regained the fluency that once made him India’s most dependable ODI batsman. In the second ODI, Rohit scored a resilient 73, followed by a masterful unbeaten 121 in the third, steering India to a dominant nine wicket win.

“It was vintage Rohit Sharma  timing, placement, and confidence. He was playing like the 2019 World Cup Rohit,” Srikkanth added.

The former selector also dismissed concerns about Rohit’s age, insisting that fitness and form should be the only criteria for selection.

“Don’t bring up this whole age issue. If I were the chairman of selectors, I’d tell Rohit and Kohli right now just stay fit and win us the 2027 World Cup,” Srikkanth said, sending a clear message to the Ajit Agarkar led BCCI selection committee.

With both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli displaying form and chemistry evident in their unbeaten 168-run stand against Australia calls are growing for the veteran duo to anchor India’s next World Cup campaign.
