France Seeks New African Partnerships Beyond Colonial Legacy

President Emmanuel Macron calls for equal cooperation as France reshapes its Africa strategy amid changing regional dynamics.

NAIROBI, May 13 : French President Emmanuel Macron used the Africa Forward Summit in Kenya to unveil a new diplomatic approach aimed at rebuilding France’s relationship with African nations beyond its colonial-era influence.

Speaking before leaders from more than 30 African countries, Macron stressed the importance of partnerships based on sovereignty, mutual respect and economic cooperation rather than dependency.

The summit marked a symbolic shift in France’s Africa diplomacy, as it was hosted in non-francophone Kenya for the first time. The move reflected Paris’ attempt to expand ties beyond its traditional sphere of influence in West and Central Africa.

France has faced growing anti French sentiment in several former colonies including Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, where military governments have reduced ties with Paris and strengthened relations with Russia and other global powers.

Macron acknowledged that previous French policies in Africa had created mistrust and insisted that future engagement must focus on investment, innovation, education and climate cooperation rather than military dominance.

Kenyan President William Ruto echoed the call for equal partnerships and said Africa wanted cooperation built on fairness and shared development goals.

The summit also discussed debt reform, renewable energy, food security and regional peace efforts. African leaders pushed for greater representation in global financial institutions and stronger support for infrastructure projects.

Observers noted that France’s diplomatic repositioning comes amid increasing competition for influence in Africa from China, Russia, Turkey and Gulf nations.

While some analysts welcomed Macron’s new tone, others argued that lasting change would depend on whether France truly reduces its political and military interference in African affairs.

The summit is being viewed as a significant test of France’s ability to redefine its role on the continent in an era of rapidly shifting geopolitical alliances.
