Migrants in J&K to receive 11 kg free ration per person under revised distribution scheme

  • J&K integrates migrant ration cards with NFSA database, free ration distribution starts April 18

Jammu, Apr 17: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has announced that free ration distribution for migrants will commence from April 18 at designated ration depots across the Union Territory, providing continued relief to eligible beneficiaries under a specially notified scheme.

According to the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, the distribution will be carried out for migrants in both the Kashmir and Jammu divisions in terms of the government notification issued on March 5.

Relief Commissioner Arvind Karwani said that all relief ration card holders, regardless of whether they fall under the priority household, non-priority household, or special category, will continue to receive 11 kilograms of free ration per person per month along with one kilogram of sugar under the existing scale.

He further clarified that persons registered with the relief department under the non-relief category, including pensioners and those classified as non-priority households, will be provided ration at government-approved rates in accordance with their entitlement under the National Food Security Act.

The Relief Commissioner said the government has already carried out the necessary amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Food Security Rules, 2021, as well as the Targeted Public Distribution System Control Order, to facilitate the integration of migrant ration cards with the NFSA database.

He said that this integration will enable migrant beneficiaries to access a wider range of government welfare schemes in a more streamlined manner.

Karwani also stated that, as per the government order, the existing procedures relating to ration distribution, as well as matters concerning inclusion, deletion, bifurcation, conversion, and corrections in ration cards, will continue to be governed by the norms laid down by the relief department.

To ensure that beneficiaries are fully informed about the scheme, the department has issued several public notices and awareness jingles in advance of the rollout.

The scheme is scheduled to be formally launched in Jammu at 11 am on April 18, marking the beginning of the latest phase of ration support for migrant families in the Union Territory.
