Fresh Snowfall in Higher Reaches as Wet Spell Continues Across Kashmir
Rain lashes plains, snowfall continues in upper reaches; temperatures dip across Valley
Srinagar, Mar 18: Fresh snowfall was reported from higher reaches of Kashmir on Wednesday, while widespread rainfall swept across the Valley, bringing a noticeable dip in temperatures, officials said.
Snowfall was recorded in areas such as Pir Ki Gali along the Mughal Road and Sonamarg, with most mountainous regions remaining covered under snow. Intermittent snowfall has been continuing in higher altitudes since the weekend.
Meanwhile, the plains, including Srinagar, experienced steady rainfall through the day. The wet spell has led to a fall in daytime temperatures across the Valley, with Srinagar recording a maximum of 14.9°C, below the seasonal average.
Weather conditions in recent days have been marked by cooler days and relatively warmer nights due to persistent cloud cover, reversing the earlier trend of above normal temperatures.
The Meteorological Department has forecast unsettled weather conditions till March 20, with intermittent light to moderate rain or snowfall expected at several places. Some higher reaches of south Kashmir and the Chenab Valley may receive moderate to heavy snowfall.
Another spell of wet weather is likely between March 26 and 28, with chances of light precipitation in scattered higher areas. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph and isolated hailstorms are also possible in the coming days.
Authorities have advised farmers to temporarily halt agricultural activities until March 20 in view of the prevailing weather conditions.
