Jammu, Oct 16:  In a major administrative and symbolic move, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday declared that the much-anticipated proposal for the restoration of the full Darbar Move has received formal approval from the Lieutenant Governor, and that a notification announcing its implementation will be issued soon.

Speaking at a press conference held at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan, the headquarters of the National Conference (NC) in Jammu, Omar Abdullah marked the completion of one year of his government in office by reaffirming his commitment to reviving Jammu and Kashmir’s historic traditions and bridging the regional divide between Jammu and Srinagar.

“The file regarding the resumption of the full Darbar Move was approved by the Lieutenant Governor, and I have also signed it. The formal order will be issued soon,” the Chief Minister announced, drawing applause from party members and supporters.

Omar Abdullah criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for discontinuing the century-old practice, which dates back to the pre-1947 era. “They (BJP) accuse us of not understanding or respecting the region’s history. Ironically, it was they who destroyed one of the oldest and most symbolic administrative traditions of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

The Chief Minister underscored that the restoration of the Darbar Move was not just an administrative act but also a gesture of respect toward the region’s composite heritage and political balance. “This practice was not merely about moving offices; it was about connecting the people of Jammu and Srinagar, ensuring that governance remained accessible to both regions. We made a promise to restore this legacy, and today, we have fulfilled it,” Omar Abdullah stated.

When reminded of his earlier remarks where he had questioned the necessity of the Darbar Move, the Chief Minister clarified that those were personal reflections and not policy commitments. “That was an idea I shared, not a sovereign decision. Our current action aligns with our manifesto and the people’s expectations. If, in the future, any modifications are required, they can be discussed, but for now, our promise stands delivered,” he remarked.

Omar Abdullah further highlighted the importance of the decision for Jammu’s political and emotional inclusion, arguing that the city had been marginalized despite its contribution to the state’s governance. “Ironically, it is those who were branded as anti-Jammu who have restored Jammu’s rightful place. The National Conference has always been a party of both regions, Jammu and Kashmir and this step is proof of that inclusivity,” he said.

He also expressed hope that the revival of the Darbar Move would end the political propaganda that the NC functions only as a Kashmir-centric party. “With this restoration, we have demonstrated our commitment to every citizen of Jammu and Kashmir. This decision reaffirms our unity and shared history,” he concluded.
