Gaddafi’s Son Saif al-Islam Allegedly Gunned Down by Unknown Attackers
Masked gunmen allegedly stormed the residence of Muammar Gaddafi’s son investigation underway as authorities remain silent
Islam, Feb 04 : Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of former Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, was reportedly shot dead on Tuesday during an armed assault on his residence in Zintan, according to media reports. He was 53.
A statement shared on social media by Abdullah Othman Abdurrahim, a member of Gaddafi’s political team, claimed that four masked attackers entered the property around noon after disabling surveillance cameras. A confrontation followed, resulting in Saif al-Islam’s death. No group has yet been identified as responsible for the attack.
His lawyer also confirmed the killing to AFP, stating that a unit of armed men carried out the assault at his home in the western Libyan city.
Saif al-Islam had remained a significant and controversial political figure since the 2011 NATO backed uprising that ended Muammar Gaddafi’s four decade rule. His father governed Libya from 1969 until he was killed during the rebellion.
Following the incident, members of Gaddafi’s political circle urged Libya’s judiciary and the international community to ensure a thorough probe, calling for the perpetrators and any masterminds behind the attack to be brought to justice.
While local media reports suggest that the Libyan Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation, officials in Tripoli and Zintan have not yet issued an official statement on the reported assassination.
