Garo Hills Autonomous District Council Elections Scheduled for April 10, 2026 in Meghalaya
Notification on March 9 Counting on April 14 as Parties Announce Candidates
Shillong, Feb 17: The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the schedule for the GHADC elections 2026, with polling to be conducted on April 10, Health and Family Welfare Minister Wailadmiki Shylla announced on Tuesday.
The election notification will be issued on March 9. Candidates can file nominations until March 16, with scrutiny scheduled the same day after 3 pm. The final date for withdrawal of candidature is March 17 till 3 pm. Valid nominations will be published and symbols allotted on March 18.
Voting will take place from 7 am to 4 pm on April 10, and the counting of votes is slated for April 14.
Meanwhile, the National People’s Party (NPP), which currently heads the Executive Committee in the council, has released its first list of 24 nominees. The party denied a ticket to incumbent Chief Executive Member Albinush Marak, citing “winnability” as the deciding factor.
NPP Working President and Cabinet Minister Marcuise N Marak said Calis G Momin has been fielded from the Siju constituency in place of the sitting CEM. He added that selections were based on performance potential, commitment to the party, and prior experience.
The party is yet to announce candidates for five seats Raksamgre, Naguapara, Bocdamgre, Silkigre and Rongrikkimgre.
Under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, Meghalaya has three autonomous district councils for the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills empowered to legislate on subjects including land, forests and local taxation.
