Gaza Strip Nears Humanitarian Catastrophe as Food and Water Run Out, UN Urges Aid Corridor

12-10-2023 : The Gaza Strip Faces Dire Humanitarian Crisis.  UN Pleads for Aid Corridor Amid an ongoing blockade by Israel and preparations for further military action, the Gaza Strip grapples with an alarming scarcity of food and water, according to the United Nations (UN). Samer Abdeljaber, the Palestine country director for the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP), expressed concerns over dwindling fuel, water, and electricity supplies, adding that overcrowded shelters are straining their capacity to provide aid. With bakeries unable to operate, tomorrow’s situation appears even more perilous.

The WFP’s deputy head of emergencies, Brian Lander, warned that they are running out of resources to assist those who have sought refuge in schools and other locations throughout the territory. In response, they have called upon Egypt and Israel to establish a secure corridor for humanitarian assistance, particularly after humanitarian sites, clinics, and schools have been targeted by airstrikes. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) echoed these concerns, urging the creation of a safe passage for aid and medicine.

Furthermore, the ICRC warned that the fuel powering emergency generators in hospitals could run out within hours, potentially turning these vital facilities into morgues. ICRC regional director Fabrizio Carboni emphasized the human suffering resulting from the ongoing conflict and urged both sides to prioritize the well-being of civilians. Israeli Energy Minister Israel Katz, however, maintained that no exceptions would be made in the blockade unless Israeli hostages were returned. The relentless cycle of violence escalated after an unprecedented attack by Hamas militants from Gaza on October 7, followed by a retaliatory response from Israel, resulting in a devastating death toll of over 2,600 people in both Israel and Gaza.
