Geetanjali Angmo Meets Detained Activist Husband, Says Wangchuk Ready to Stay in Jail for Justice

Legal Team to Contest NSA Order Against Sonam Wangchuk; SC Hearing on October 14

Jodhpur, Oct 8: Geetanjali J Angmo, wife of renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, visited her husband at Jodhpur Central Jail on Tuesday, where he has been lodged since his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) following the September 24 violence in Leh. Accompanied by lawyer Ritam Khare, Angmo met Wangchuk and later shared details of the visit on social media platform X. She confirmed that Wangchuk’s legal team has obtained a copy of his detention order, which specifies the allegations made against him and the grounds cited by authorities for invoking the stringent NSA. Angmo said the legal team is preparing to challenge the detention in court.

Earlier, Wangchuk’s brother, Tsetan Dorje, along with lawyer Mustafa Haji, had also met him in jail. Following that meeting, Haji revealed that Wangchuk reiterated his demand for an independent judicial inquiry into the deaths of four people during the protests and expressed his willingness to remain incarcerated until such an inquiry is initiated.

Angmo has filed a petition before the Supreme Court seeking Wangchuk’s immediate release, with the hearing scheduled for October 14. Wangchuk was arrested after violent clashes erupted during demonstrations demanding statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Initially detained in Delhi, he was transferred to Jodhpur Central Jail on September 26.
