Ghulam Ahmad Mir Blasts BJP for Political Suppression in J&K and Pushes for Democracy During Nomination

J&K Elections Heat Up: Congress and NC Set to Challenge BJP with Strategic Alliances and New Faces

Srinagar, 27-08-2024 : Congress candidate Ghulam Ahmad Mir, running for the Dooru Assembly constituency, filed his nomination for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections on Tuesday. In a statement following the filing, Mir expressed strong criticism of the BJP, accusing the party of causing severe hardship to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He highlighted that the region has been without proper representation for the past 11 years, which he attributes to the oppressive policies of both the BJP and the central government. Mir emphasized that the INDIA alliance’s call for democratic reforms in the region stems from these grievances, asserting that the people deserve the right to elect their representatives and participate in governance.

Mir’s comments came amid ongoing electoral preparations, with BJP candidate Saleem Bhat from Banihal Assembly also making his case for the party’s victory. Bhat, who has been with the BJP since 2008, voiced his confidence in securing support for the party, attributing much of this confidence to the achievements of Prime Minister Modi. Bhat underscored his commitment to the BJP’s vision of peace and development, asserting that the party’s focus on progress over conflict distinguishes it from its competitors. He criticized Congress and the National Conference (NC) for their alleged pursuit of power over the welfare of the people, contrasting this with the BJP’s emphasis on development and stability.

In a related development, NC candidate Sajjad Shaheen from Banihal highlighted the strategic alliance between his party and Congress, aimed at countering what he termed as communal forces in the valley. This alliance is part of a broader electoral strategy where the National Conference will contest 51 out of 90 seats, while Congress will field candidates in 32 constituencies. The two parties have also agreed to a “friendly contest” in five constituencies and allocated one seat each to the CPI(M) and the Panthers Party.

The BJP has already announced its list of 16 candidates for the elections, covering both Jammu and Kashmir regions. The election process will unfold in three phases: on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the results to be counted on October 4. The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has 90 assembly constituencies and approximately 88.06 lakh electors, as per the Election Commission.
