Government Clarifies: Omitted ‘Socialist’ and ‘Secular’ Words in New Constitution Copies Represent Original Draft

Congress Raises Concerns: 'Socialist' and 'Secular' Words Allegedly Omitted in New Constitution Copies

20-09-2023 : Addressing the controversy surrounding the alleged omission of the words “socialist” and “secular” from the new copies of the Constitution, the Central government firmly refuted these claims by asserting that the copies in question represent the original Constitution, as the said words were added later through an amendment.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal, clarified the situation by stating, “When the Constitution was initially drafted, it did not include these terms. The inclusion of ‘socialist’ and ‘secular’ happened through a subsequent amendment. What we have here is the original copy of the Constitution. Our spokesperson has already addressed this matter.”

These statements by Minister Meghwal came in response to allegations made by the Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, and another Member of Parliament, Dola Sen. They claimed that the words ‘socialist’ and ‘secular’ had been removed from the Preamble of the Constitution of India in the new copies distributed to MPs on Tuesday.
