Government Expands Free Dialysis Programme to Cover More District Hospitals
Health Ministry approves nationwide expansion to improve access to life-saving kidney care in underserved regions
New Delhi, July 23: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday announced a major expansion of the government’s Free Dialysis Programme, extending services to additional district hospitals across the country to improve treatment access for patients suffering from chronic kidney disease.
The expansion is aimed at reducing the financial burden on economically weaker families who require regular dialysis sessions. Under the revised plan, new dialysis units will be established in districts where specialised kidney care facilities remain limited, particularly in rural and remote regions.
Officials said the programme will receive additional funding for procuring dialysis machines, strengthening laboratory services and training healthcare professionals. Hospitals participating in the initiative will also receive technical assistance to ensure quality treatment standards.
The ministry noted that chronic kidney disease is emerging as a significant public health concern due to rising cases of diabetes, hypertension and ageing populations. Expanding dialysis services is expected to reduce travel time for patients and improve treatment adherence.
Along with infrastructure upgrades, the government plans to enhance digital monitoring systems for dialysis centres to track patient outcomes, equipment performance and medicine availability. Health authorities believe this will improve service efficiency and reduce interruptions in treatment.
Public health experts have welcomed the expansion, stating that timely access to dialysis can significantly improve survival rates and quality of life for patients with end stage kidney disease.
The Health Ministry said the initiative forms part of its broader strategy to strengthen non-communicable disease management and ensure equitable healthcare access across all states and Union Territories.
As more district hospitals join the programme, officials expect thousands of additional patients to benefit from free, high-quality dialysis services closer to their homes.
